Split then double?

so i was playing a live table, got two eights vs dealer’s six, split like always. first hand gets a three so i’ve got eleven, then i try to double, but the dealer says no can do after a split. i know some places let you double after splitting, others don’t, but it always messes with my head. like, the math is totally different if you can't double on split hands, right? does that make splitting eights less solid in those houses, or do you still stick with it every time no matter what?

i get why some tables don’t wanna allow the extra action but it feels kinda half-baked, like what’s the point of splitting if you can’t maximize it? how much do you all weigh this rule when picking a live dealer table?
