dead heat rules confusing

dead heat rules always trip me up, especially with horse racing but i notice it’s creeping into other sports too. was betting on a golf tournament last weekend, had an each way bet, and the result ended up in a tie for third. my payout looked way lower than i expected. figured i understood how the split worked but the bookie math seems different every time.

i usually check t&cs for dead heat but it still never feels consistent. roulette’s cut and dry, but these shared placements just feel like a loophole for the house. do you guys stick to win bets only when it’s a field with a high chance of dead heat or do you hedge with multiples or something? just curious what others actually do with this.

Nah, the “loophole for the house” part is where I’d push back. Dead heat math is usually boringly consistent, people just price the bet in their head like the full place terms still apply after a tie. They don’t. In golf especially, I quit pretending each-way is some safe little cushion when the board is crowded. If the implied probability on a top-5 is already thin, a tie nukes the value fast. So from my own slips: I either bet outright or I pass. I don’t hedge with cute multiples either, ngl, that’s usually just paying extra juice to feel busy.

Golf each-way is a TAX lol, crowded board and dead heat just shaves it to dust. I pass or go win only.

Yeah, i quit each-way in tie-prone stuff. Dead heat usually cuts the stake first, then the place terms get applied, and that’s why it feels worse than roulette.

Yeah, I wouldn’t call it a loophole so much as people overestimating what “place” pays when half the field lands on the same rung. In golf I go win-only for that reason. Got my teeth kicked in on an each way tie for 3rd once, same flat feeling as a blackjack push when you were already spending the money.
