Do odds really reflect probability or is it all just bookmaker magic?

Every time I line up my bets, I jot down the odds and try to map them out against what I actually know about the teams or players. Sometimes they make sense, sometimes they’re way off from what I’d expect if I was just running numbers on my own. I’ve seen odds swing for weird reasons too, like a surge of bets on one side out of nowhere. Feels like the bookies are half managing probability and half just steering the crowd.

I’ve been burned thinking the odds had some magic knowledge I was missing. Anyone else feel like there’s more art than science to the way these get set up?

Odds aren’t pure probability, they’re more like poker tells mixed with crowd control. Bookies set them as part science and part bait, and watching live dealer tables taught me that reading the room is sometimes smarter than trusting the math alone.
