Bet behind question

so i was messing around on a live blackjack table and noticed a bunch of people just betting behind others, not taking seats themselves. i get the whole concept, but what really confuses me is why someone would want to give up control of decisions like hitting or standing. i mean, if i’m gonna put my money in, i want to actually play the hand, right? or is there some edge i’m not seeing?

do you guys use bet behind just to keep action going when the seats are full, or is there a real strategy angle here? curious if anyone actually prefers this or if it’s just desperation when all the spots are taken. what’s your take on it?

"messing around" is always how it starts. I did that in a live casino once, bet behind some donkey, watched him stand stupid and drag me to a bust.

Yeah there’s no secret edge there, mostly it’s people wanting action without the seat, or they found one player they think isn’t a total donkey and they tail them. I’ve done it when tables were full and I was too impatient to wait, which is usually the first bad decision, strategic patience is the part I always wish I had about 20 minutes earlier. But prefer it? No. Not even a little. Feels like making a sports betting pick then letting some guy at the bar decide when to cash out, same irritation. And honestly half the time the seated player does some weird hit after the shuffle and now you’re stuck riding along like great, cool, love that for me. People act like they’re reducing mistakes, really they’re outsourcing them. I’m a little salty because I’ve watched behind bettors dodge all my bad seat decisions and win anyway, which is obnoxious as hell
