Poker variance: how bad does a downswing actually get sometimes

honestly i used to think downswings were just a few bad sessions but last month has me questioning my sanity. even with decent plays and solid preflop charts i can't buy a flip, not even small stakes cash games. was up a few buy-ins then crashed to what feels like the bottom, running straight into setups and just dead cards everywhere. i’m watching guys get paid with way worse hands and it’s just folding city for me.

i know variance is real and all, but i’m kinda curious how rough it actually gets for some of you. is there a point you just have to step away for a bit or do you just power through? how do you track when it’s just a downswing or something’s really off in your play?

honestly, poker downswings get deeper than most slots droughts if you stick around long enough. one year i watched my winrate vanish across 60k hands, felt like folding to river bets became my job description. not sure anyone really believes it until it drags out for months.

tracking my confidence in each turn decision says more than looking at bankroll charts. once i catch myself second-guessing obvious folds, that’s the only time i shut it down for a day. bankroll can rebuild, but playing with frayed instincts is just leaking chips everywhere.

for me, tracking session length helps more than obsessing over individual hands, especially after bonus chases. ever try logging hours and mood, not just outcomes?

On casino slots, variance spikes can outlast any session tracker, so I always cap my daily loss or I spiral. Have you noticed if those dead stretches push you to risk more just to feel something?

If I feel numb just checking my poker bankroll, I take a couple days off and punt small on some sports bets for a mental reset instead. That distance usually tells me if I’m really on tilt or just catching the ugly side of variance.

When my “Operation Cold Deck” stretch hit 30 buy-ins below EV in five card draw, I switched to reviewing every hand before another session, not just venting. How often are you seeing spots you’d play differently now than a week ago?
