best poker tells if you're playing against someone new
When I end up at a table with someone totally new to poker, I’m never sure which “tells” actually matter. Some people say newbies are more obvious but honestly, I find the reverse. They don’t have any routine or habits, so their nervousness comes out in weird ways like grip strength on chips, looking at their cards one too many times, or just random chatter about the last hand. It’s hard to gauge if those things mean anything or if they’re just trying to get comfortable. Curious what others look out for when the usual signals don’t fit.
i watch how they handle their stack during quiet pots. when someone new unconsciously separates chips into little towers or counts them mid-hand, it’s often anxiety about losing what’s left, not strength or bluffing. do you notice chip handling shift once they win a couple pots, or does it stay jittery?
I mostly watch how quick they act after checking the river. Rookies sometimes rush tough spots, thinking speed means confidence. I’d skip betting patterns if it’s all nervous energy and focus on timing tells instead.
