best poker game type if you hate variance completely.
I know “hating variance” and “playing poker” kind of clash, but I get it - variance tilts me way harder than it should. That gut punch when you get it in good and still bust is half the reason I stick with slots and live dealer stuff, at least you know what to expect long-term. I always feel like the whole point with poker is managing swings, but man, some games are way worse than others for making your blood boil.
Stuff like PLO just seems off the charts for swings, way too much for anyone that wants to keep their sanity. I tried limit games a bit, and it felt a little steadier, but is there really any game where you can grind without feeling the wild up-and-downs constantly? Maybe heads-up cash? Or is that just a fantasy?
Curious if anyone actually found a poker game type that keeps variance to a minimum, or is that just part of the deal no matter what you choose? What are you guys playing when you want the smoothest ride possible?
limit hold’em is probably about as smooth as you get, but honestly, steady doesn’t mean variance-free. i come from blackjack where variance still exists, just feels more “measured” per hand. poker’s wild swings are the price of real upside. if you want the “smoothest ride” possible, maybe check out low stakes, short-handed limit, but expect your patience to be tested more than your luck.
