anyone successful at poker without studying constantly

I know a guy at the local casino who claims he’s been crushing the poker tables for years, barely ever reading a single book or watching any training videos. He just sits, talks, orders drinks, trusts his gut and counts chips at the end of the night. The rest of us seem to live on hand replays and those late-night study binges hoping to pick apart every leak. I’m not sure if he’s just running good or there’s some low-key wisdom in not overthinking every river decision.

I play a fair bit of roulette and sports on the side, and I see some crossover - people win big with no deep system sometimes and the math guys eat their heart out for months. Makes me wonder if poker, at a certain level, lets the instinct folks get by, or if variance just crowns a few lucky ones before the grind takes its toll. Curious if anyone here keeps winning long term without turning it into homework every week.

Seeing this pattern in sports betting too. Someone goes on a heater calling underdog parlays, next month they’re scrambling for another score. That “just vibes” energy works in short bursts, but I rarely see it outpace variance year after year.

Only exception I’ve spotted, folks who pick one small edge, like exploiting bad prop lines, and have the patience to grind it. No big study routine, just showing up steady and not forcing plays when it’s dry.

instinct wins feel real, but long haul the math grinders eat less dust unless you're exploiting soft lineups

Gut check time, I actually think some folks get a real edge from just managing tilt better. Not fancy play or theory, just keeping their head screwed on and avoiding the blowups. I’ve seen it on the roulette wheel too, where the calm ones ride the swings without chasing losses or spazzing on cold streaks.

But if we’re talking long term, I can’t name anyone crushing without either putting in serious hours or knowing exactly when to walk away. Fast wins happen, but steady profit? That’s more about bankroll discipline than some magic vibe.

Are there any sites or tourneys where you’ve seen chill, no-study types last for years? I’m always looking for proof someone beats the numbers with nothing but feel.

I’d add that table selection can matter more than homework at some limits, especially on smaller sites where player pools are thin. Has anyone noticed softer action at niche games like horse lately?

table picking matters, but even on softer HORSE games i notice players leaking chips fast if they don’t track session swings or limits closely. have you ever run deep just logging win/loss patterns without any deep study?

Chasing those niche tables is smart, but I'm seeing more folks just tilt-proofing themselves rather than focusing on thin player pools. Have you noticed if the regulars in horse stick to strict stop-loss routines, or do they just ride out swings and hope?

Seen folks coast for a while on pure vibes, but like hitting a max win in slots, it rarely repeats without real strategy behind it. For promotions, Bitstarz makes it easy to hop in, though riding luck alone never kept my balance healthy.

i used to think i could coast on instinct too but bankroll leaks snuck up quick, especially chasing those promo nights haha. now i just log sessions and review outcomes like i do for slots, it isn’t glamorous but keeps the lights on.

Back when I mixed more sports betting with poker, I kept thinking discipline was boring until I saw how many streaky guys gave back their wins just chasing action too long
