counting shoes online pointless?

I’ve always wondered if trying to count shoes while playing blackjack online is just a waste of effort. With live dealer games, you can see the cards being dealt, but there’s no way to tell when they’re shuffling or even how many decks they’re actually running through. Most sites have continuous shuffle machines or swap out the shoe after every hand, so all the numbers in the world won’t help if the deck is basically randomized every round.

On top of that, there’s the question of whether anyone’s even had long-term success tracking the count online. Maybe I’m overthinking it, but isn’t the house edge impossible to beat in this format? Has anybody managed to keep good notes and found a method that works online, or is it just best to stick to the promos and play for fun?
