Poker player types: why are recreational players always so predictable

Every time I end up at a low-stakes table, it just feels like you can spot the recs from orbit. It’s always the same, limp, call, never raise without the nuts, and then go on about how unlucky they got after calling with bottom pair all the way down. Is it just comfort zone? Sometimes I wonder if it’s more about not wanting to look stupid in front of strangers, so they just play super safe and telegraph their hand strength like a semaphore.

Thing is, when someone starts mixing it up or bluffs in spots where most people would fold, it’s almost always a regular. Meanwhile, the recs stick to their own script. For someone who mostly plays roulette, I’m used to systems and random swings, but in poker, the patterns stand out more. I find it oddly relaxing to play with people who just won’t bluff or slowplay - maybe because it means the only thing random is the river, not the way people act. Anyone else seeing the same thing?

Back when I first picked up blackjack, I noticed that folks sticking to strict rules often did it just to avoid regret. Poker recs might play that way for the same peace of mind.

Online casino tables are even more extreme for this. Most recs play super face-up because they think everyone’s tracking every move, but the higher rake actually punishes anything fancy unless you’re deep stacked or really mixing it up.

Reminds me of folks on slots who bet tiny and never chase features, then wonder why it feels slow. It’s comfort in predictability.

comfort is part of it, but recs rarely track their own leaks either. like in casino reviews, most people focus on flashy promos and miss where the real odds hurt them.

For some it’s just about not busting fast. Kind of like watching people grind bonus rounds on slots, slow and steady because losing quick is worse than missing out on a big payout. I get it, but I do wish someone would mix it up once in a while.

Reminds me of people who stick to red or black in roulette all night, never touching the inside bets. Most just want the illusion of reliability, even if it means their session drags on forever.
