Roulette split bets: does spreading your bets actually reduce variance

so i’ve always just thrown chips on singles or reds/blacks, but lately i’ve been trying splits around my favorite numbers. some nights it feels like spreading out with splits gets you more little hits and kind of smooths out the losses, but then i’ll hit a run where nothing connects and it tanks just as hard as going all in on one spot. i’m probably overthinking it, but do splits really do anything for variance, or does the house edge just kill you slowly no matter how you play?

anyone notice any real difference when sticking with splits or are there smarter ways to play if the goal is to keep the bankroll alive longer?

if survival's the goal, i swap tables as soon as i spot a min bet hike on grand roulette. try it once.

I think splits can change the feel of the session more than the actual long-term result.

You may get more partial hits compared with straight-up numbers, so the bankroll can feel smoother for a while, but the house edge is still sitting underneath everything. If the total amount at risk per spin stays high, spreading chips around does not really save the session.

For bankroll survival, I’d probably focus more on smaller unit size and a hard stop-loss than the exact bet shape. Splits, neighbors, outside bets, etc. mostly seem like different ways to control pacing and variance, not ways to beat the wheel.
