has anyone actually hit a big jackpot on a progressive slot online? how does it work?

so i’ve played a fair amount of progressives, both on real floors and online, but the best i’ve ever seen was a buddy winning like a grand - not even close to those giant totals they advertise. i always wonder about those huge prizes they flash at the top of the screen. is it basically just luck, or are there actual strategies people use to increase the odds? i know the odds get smaller as the jackpot grows, but it feels like no one ever really hits them, at least not anyone i know. the side games that trigger the jackpot feel super rare, too.
