ways pays question

Been trying some new slots that use this “ways pays” thing instead of regular paylines. I get the basics, like matching symbols on any reel from left to right, but it still trips me up. Sometimes I get three matching symbols all the way across and the win feels tiny, then other times two or three symbols pop and the payout's weirdly bigger. Not sure if it's just the symbol values or if there's something else in the background math I'm missing.

I’ve always preferred table games but I’m giving these a fair shot. Can someone explain what triggers the better hits on ways pays setups? Is there some strategy to chasing certain reels or stacks, or is it all just spin and pray? I look at the paytables but all those numbers and diagrams scramble my brain after a while. Want to get a handle on what I’m really risking before sinking in too much bankroll.

"fair shot" at slots after table games is how roulette drags you over too... same bankroll leak, different sound effects

The big thing with ways pays is that you're usually getting paid based on how many matching symbols appear on consecutive reels, plus how many ways those symbols can combine. So a screen with multiple matching symbols can create way more combinations than it initially looks like.

What matters to me is the paytable gap, not the cute cloud of combinations. If the top symbol is 40x for 5 and the low junk is 0.2x for 3, that game’s built to keep you warm with crumbs while the RNG waits you out, same as bad live betting when the book hangs a rotten -145.

the part that annoys me more is when people act like “more ways” means better hits by itself. noooo. if reel 2 and 3 aren’t stacked with the symbol you need, all those ways are decoration. i’ve had games spit out 243 ways on the splash screen and still pay less than the min bet for what looked like a full screen. stupid. you can hear the big win sound effects over a 0.40 hit and that tells you the whole scam. you’re right about the paytable gap, but i also check how often wilds actually land in the middle reels. if they’re scarce, i pass. easy. same reason i skip bad tiers bet nonsense in roulette. crumbs are crumbs.

“fair shot” at slots when you prefer tables is how sports bettors end up live-betting junk at halftime, lowkey!!!

Ways pays is mostly just symbol value and how many land on each reel, and the sound effects make the rubbish hits feel bigger than they are. Near as I can tell, chasing stacks is like auto roulette logic, which is why I drift back to sports betting.

small correction: it isn't “three all the way across” that matters most, it's how many ways those symbols land. 2 on reel 1, 3 on reel 2, 2 on reel 3 is 12 ways, and a garbage symbol still pays like pocket lint. part of why i crawl back to blackjack and a split i can actually see.

I screwed this up for years, it's symbol value and how many ways connect, not a strategy thing
