Expanding wilds broken?

So expanding wilds are supposed to help fill the screen for those mega wins, but I swear lately they either expand halfway or just freeze on me. I had three separate spins last night where the wild just sat there, didn’t even stretch a muscle. I know RNG is real, but shouldn’t the animation at least work if it’s coded in? I’m starting to think these things are just there to tease and drain bankrolls slowly instead of actually hitting big.

Not saying the games are rigged - at least not out loud - but it does feel a bit off. Maybe it’s just me watching too closely after a dry spell. Anybody else seeing this? Maybe time to go back to old-school fruit machines and stop chasing sparkly features.
