Surrender rule question

so i was playing at a local spot yesterday and i got dealt a 16 against the dealer’s 10, classic nightmare, right? i went for surrender because, you know, “sometimes losing less is a win” is my personal blackjack wisdom and the dealer looked like i just asked for a side of fries with my cards. said they only do early surrender, not late. now, i’ve been in enough casinos to know the difference but i swear most places i play just say “no surrender” or “surrender after peek” and move on. i always thought “late surrender” was the one more common in the US, but now i’m wondering if house rules are just all over the place.

so now i’m thinking - do most of you guys even check surrender rules before you sit down or do you just ask when the moment comes? i always assume, which might explain why i keep ordering fries at weird moments. anyone had weird or unexpected surrender situations? ever seen both options at the same casino?

"salty" over surrender rules is still better than pretending slots are simple. Crypto casinos love that kind of autopilot, and that gets expensive fast 😏
