Soft 18 still confuses me sometimes

Soft 18 trips me up, especially when I’m playing online and there’s not a ton of time to think. I know basic strategy says it depends on what the dealer’s showing, but for some reason hitting on a soft 18 against a strong dealer card just feels wrong in the moment. Like, I always get that little voice saying “stand, you’ve got 18,” even though I know it’s not technically the best move. Maybe it’s just muscle memory from early mistakes.

Lately I’ve been seeing some people saying you can double down on soft 18 more often than the charts suggest, kind of as a way to push some advantage on single deck games. Is there any legit math behind that or is it just selective memory when it works out? I’m not out here trying to reinvent the wheel but I like understanding the why before just memorizing moves. Curious if anyone’s ever tracked a streak of soft 18 doubles or just sticks to the book.

Nah, “double soft 18 more” is selective-memory crap lol. In live dealer, chart it and beat the betting interface rush.

Stream delay fries soft 18.

The interface rush thing gets overstated!!! What actually screws soft 18 for me in live dealer is lazy rebet setup, then you’re underclicked when the double spot matters. In one 200-hand common draw session I botched 6 doubles just cleaning that up, which is just annoying...

I screwed this up for years because “18” looked finished in my head, dumb little trap. The only thing that cleared it up for me in blackjack was noticing how much the rules matter first, single deck gets talked up soooo much but if the deck penetration is junk that extra-aggressive soft 18 stuff is just noise to me

Soft 18 in live dealer? Play the chart.

It’s selective memory, same as every “i swear soft 18 prints” story. In live dealer games i just play the chart and move on. Over 500 hands, freestyling soft 18 usually shows up as a slow leak 🙂
