16 vs dealer 10: hit or stand?

I swear this spot does my head in more than anything else.

I know the book says hit, but 16 into a dealer 10 still looks like one of those hands where you're just walking into shit...

If it's a hard 16 and not a pair, does anyone really just hit that every time?

I end up standing more than I should because dealer 10 already looks strong as fuck!
Then when I hit and pull a face card it just annoys me more.

I'm not talking about surrender, just plain hit or stand on a normal blackjack table...
