Roulette corner bets: why do people play these instead of straight bets.

so i always see folks making those corner bets on roulette and i’m trying to get what the main draw is. seems like if you’re gunning for a big hit, a straight up bet would pay way more, right? with corners, yeah you cover more numbers but the payout drops hard. when i’m playing slots i don’t hedge much, but maybe roulette logic is different? maybe it’s all about keeping in the game longer instead of landing the huge win in one go. interested in why some stick to corners over singles.
